The Good Horsemanship Society So you want to ride with nothing on? At last you can and be insured too! A new society has just been launched that offers everything riders and horse-owners have expected from an insurance inclusive membership package but with an added extra! The Good Horsemanship Society has developed an insurance package to include with their subscription that covers riders, handlers and their horses for Public Liability even when they use minimal equipment, namely halters and headcollars when riding in public areas such as the highway. Horse owners have always been warned that they would be deemed not to be in control if they led or rode their horses in only a headcollar on the public highway. This is archaic thinking and with today’s forward looking training ideas riders and their horses can easily be taught to be perfectly safe when leading and riding in headcollars. The Society insurance even covers riding with just a string round the neck on private property as the Underwriters have deemed the risk to be minimal. From the very beginning the Underwriters knew that members must be encouraged to train properly in good horsemanship so they approached Vanessa Bee of Positive Horsemanship Training and founder of the phenomenally successful Horse Agility Club and asked her to develop The Good Horsemanship Society as an insurance inclusive membership only club which promotes good horsemanship through education and training rather than gadgets and restraint. Vanessa does not promote one system or style of training believing that there are only two forms of horsemanship, good and bad and that it doesn’t matter what equipment the horse and rider are using as long as the result is good. Launched at the end of March the website is still in the early stages of becoming a full blown resource for good horsemanship practices but as memberships continue to grow the indications are that the Good Horsemanship Society is set to be at the forefront of the promotion and development of good horsemanship worldwide. Sunday the 21st February saw the first ever Horse Agility Competition held at the Mendip Stud in Somerset. Everyone who took part had a fantastic time with training sessions in the morning followed by a competition in the afternoon. The two youngsters who took part blossomed throughout the day and competed alongside the older horses as if they had done it all before! The testing Agility course devised by Vanessa Bee saw horses and handlers compete successfully to gain not only rosettes but league Points to be entered into The Horse Agility Club League to win a Trophy which will be presented at the end of the year. Vanessa Bee who devised and started the Horse Agility Club commented: “ It was so encouraging to see two young horses flourish throughout the day from unfocussed youngsters who didn’t know where their feet were to successfully and safely negotiating obstacles which I’ve seen older horses turn and run from. A great start for them! The day illustrated that this sport is suitable for all ages of horses and handlers and is great fun for everyone!” Vanessa, who has bred and shown her own Exmoor ponies and knows the breed well, was delighted that there were two entire Exmoors taking part, the overall prize being won by Hawkwell Vesuvius ably handled by Dawn Westcott. Results The Horse Agility Club 21st February 2010 The Mendip Stud Somerset The scores were as follows: Class 1 Pony – Starter level 1st Dawn Westcott and Hawkwell Versuvius - 124 points 2nd Joy Pritchard and Waltersgay Dragonfly – 105 points Class 2 Horse – Starter Level 1st Beccy Williams and Bugsy – 117 points 2nd Dale Sutcliffe and Meeko – 113 points Overall winner at the competition: Dawn Westcott and Hawkwell Versuvius Due to an overwhelming response from horse handlers and 'involved spectators' the Training Day and Mini Competition previously to be held at The Stables, Halwill Junction EX21 5XE WILL NOW BE HELD 3 MILES DOWN THE ROAD AT ROWDEN FARM STABLES EX21 5TT where there is an indoor and an outdoor arena at our disposal. This gives much more room for trailers and 'involved spectators'. From 2pm anyone is invited to come and watch a demonstration of Horse Agility and see the course participants compete in the Mini- Competition - a great opportunity to find out what all this is about. Horse places are now full but we have room for a few 'involved spectators' who are included thoroughly in the Training Day not just watching from the fence!! New HAATs and More Events 02/16/2010
